The characters are a bit implausible, however, though perhaps just in how quickly they rise to a better perspective and approach to their relationships. In a way, the hookup nature of their relationship I think was intended to create a more liberating space in which to have this learning experience.
It also creates a microcosm in which, regardless of the type of sexual relationship we might be in ourselves, we can see ourselves in the awkward position of trying to negotiate our needs and desires with another person. It is clever that the couple is forced to stay longer than planned in order to create a context in which their frank discussion and sex "practice" become plausible. Lastly, as I stated earlier, the plot and the characters seem a bit like an excuse for getting to this discussion and these messages. There is some redemption, however, as each person begins to reconsider their choices and move toward a better and more real approach to their relationship. Some might consider that the fact that it is a hookup relationship may be less positive. In this sense, the movie portrays a very positive and therapeutic message. This is a mature topic, just because it is overtly about sex, but once a couple is sexually active or considering sexual activity, the ability to communicate openly, without apology, and put into practice what they discuss is crucial for a healthy sexual relationship. Women should be empowered to say what they need/want and that couples should be open in discussing their sexual desires and needs and take the time to learn from each other. Some positive points are that women often experience pressure to "fake it," which is a bad move for everyone. A good follow up to these points would be to read books or blogs or listen to podcasts that deal with sex therapy. And hopefully, viewers, especially younger ones, can also discuss and challenge their perceptions of what sex should be like. Without discussing specific common stereotypes and misconceptions here, these issues become central to the turning point in the plot. As is traditionally the case, media portrayals of sex often reinforce stereotypes that are unhelpful, or often damaging.
With better acting and little modification in the script this could be an extraordinary movie.I see the entire plot as a somewhat clever and cute backdrop to make a few sex educational points. Another feature in this movie that I liked very much is the natural relationship between Black-White-Asian, which I can hardly find in a Hollywood movie unless the theme of the movie is race discrimination or something alike. One will rarely find this talent in Hollywood stars' face. She was not blabbing, that's true, but look at her subtle facial expressions. Some people here found Nastassja Kinski boring.
I was moved by him talking to Wesley about "life's like an orange". However, Robert Downey Jr.'s part was superb, though his character was not directly related to the movie's main story. Wesley's ad-firm colleagues were unnecessarily shown as stupid. Ming-Na Wen and Wesley Snipes were over-acting on some occasions. This movie at least provokes that kind of thought, though in a very simple way. Extra-marital relationship is very complicated subject and deserves lot of thought. However, in order to show Max-Caren pair as "unfaithful" as Mimi-Vernon pair, the event that was taking place outside the party was too imposed and simplistic. Nobody's perfect and nobody's totally wrong. This movie is different from others in a sense that there's no good guy and bad guy line here.
